Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy can be a crucial treatment for saving infected teeth, eliminating nerve pain from the tooth, and clearing out the pressure created by an infection while preserving the tooth’s structure and function. A lot of fear has been centered around this procedure, but if proper anesthesia can be achieved, those fears can be easily resolved as the experience may be quite similar to having a large cavity repaired.

What's Involved?
Access to the Nerve and Clean-Up
A root canal maintains the entire external tooth structure while only removing the nerve that is found on the inside of the tooth. An access point from the top of the tooth is created and the nerve is then removed by small files and rotary instruments.
Sterilization of the Tooth
Once the pressure and infection have been dealt with and the nerve has properly been removed, the tooth needs to be sterilized to be certain the infecting bacteria has been addressed. This leaves the tooth as a "hollow shell" which can now be restored.
Fill and Restoration
Now that the tooth is cleaned and the bacteria has been removed, a filler within the tooth canal can be placed and a restoration can be placed upon the tooth. This can be done as either a simple filling material if the access within the tooth is small, or a crown may need to be placed to offer external coverage and protection - which is the usual suggestion.
